This is a further development of the theme adapted from the late 15th century manuscript called the Ripley Scrowle. My fascination with the rose in Ripley's work comes from an appreciation of how similar his ideas were, both conceptually and iconographically, to the notion expressed in the Tibetan Buddhist mantra Om mani padme hum.

In my painting I have placed, as a ground for the figure of the rose, a field of skulls. Figure and ground, life and death...these are dualities that I hope to simultaneously embrace and transcend.
