This painting was produced after I saw a photograph of a strange object discovered at a dig somewhere in Iraq. The hollow bronze object, from the Babylonian civilization, is thought to have been some sort of device used for the distillation of plant juices. It was the earliest known example of such a device. I took some liberties with the shape of the thing, being more interested in the idea of distillation as a metaphor describing a psychological process. I was very involved in both the literature of Alchemy and the literature of Gnosticism at the time, and the work ended up as a kind of personal notebook mapping my own internal journey.
