I lived in the American South for years, and a big icon from the animals in that part of the world is the alligator. Alligators are fearsome creatures, of course, but somehow people have maintained an affectionate respect for them as well.

Even though this painting has meaning on a literal level, I was really interested in a psychological reference...an instinctive part of us operating just below the surface. In yoga, there is an energy center in the lower abdomen, called Svadisthana. Its element is water, and in India, it is associated with a mythical creature called a makara.

I wanted the alligator to exist in a hidden sort of way in the painting, maybe causing a startle when seen.
