Pranayama
This painting, also a bas relief, was inspired by the birth of my sons. The figure is fabricated with modeling paste, sanded into form. The ground, made of gesso, is constructed of hundreds of skulls, cast and fitted into place, like a stone mason would build a wall. The entire work is painted in oil. Briefly speaking, I'd just like to say that this painting is about the basic duality inherent in the idea of life...and the inevitability of death. It's been said that this fact is presented in miniature every time we breathe in and out. This simple process is something we usually take for granted, but watching a child come into the world makes me know that one day he must also leave the world, arriving with his first inhalation and departing with his last exhalation.
