Sleeping
Venus (After Giorgione) This painting is constructed as a bas relief and a painted surface. The work must be viewed as both. Part of the optical experience with the work is something compounded from seeing the painted portion first, then realizing a secondary image. The secondary image is more or less visible as a result of the manner in which the piece is lighted. Under certain lighting conditions, the figure disappears completely.
